Clean Agent vs. Kitchen Hood Suppression: Which System Fits Your Facility?

Both are suppression systems. Both are common in commercial buildings. But clean agent systems and kitchen hood suppression systems are designed for almost opposite scenarios, and confusing the two can lead to protecting the wrong risk.

Different Fuel, Different Agent

Kitchen hood systems use a wet chemical agent specifically formulated to suppress and prevent re-flash of grease fires, the fuel source in a commercial kitchen. Clean agent systems use a gaseous agent (like FM-200 or Novec 1230) designed to suppress fire in electronics and sensitive equipment without leaving residue or requiring cleanup, the opposite of what a greasy kitchen fire needs.

Different Governing Standards

Kitchen suppression falls under NFPA 96 and UL 300. Clean agent systems fall under NFPA 2001. They are inspected on different schedules (semi-annual for kitchen systems, typically annual for clean agent) by technicians certified in that specific system type.

Could a Building Need Both?

Absolutely, and it’s common. A hospital, for instance, might have a UL 300 kitchen suppression system over its cafeteria cooking line and a clean agent system protecting its server room or a diagnostic imaging equipment room, alongside a building-wide sprinkler system. Each protects a different, specific risk that a general sprinkler system alone doesn’t fully address.
