Overview
System design is the engineering process that translates a building’s occupancy, construction type, and contents into a specific sprinkler layout, pipe sizing, and water supply plan compliant with NFPA 13. A well-executed design balances code compliance, cost, and coordination with the building’s architecture and other trades. Design typically precedes the installation process described on our Installation page, and for retrofit projects, must also account for the constraints of an existing structure.
Hazard Classification
NFPA 13 groups occupancies into light hazard, ordinary hazard (groups 1 and 2), and extra hazard (groups 1 and 2) classifications based on the quantity and combustibility of contents. This classification drives water density and coverage area requirements for the design.
Hydraulic Calculations
Using density and area curves from NFPA 13, a designer calculates the water flow and pressure needed at the system’s most demanding “remote area” and verifies the water supply can deliver it, typically using specialized hydraulic calculation software.
Water Supply Analysis
A flow test of the municipal water supply, or analysis of an on-site source, determines whether available pressure and flow meet the hydraulic demand. Where the supply falls short, the design may need to incorporate a fire pump or storage tank.
Coordination With Other Trades
Sprinkler layouts must be coordinated with mechanical, electrical, and structural systems to avoid conflicts above the ceiling, often using clash detection in building information modeling (BIM) on larger projects.

Design is typically performed by a licensed fire protection engineer or a certified sprinkler designer, either employed by the installing contractor or working independently, depending on the project and jurisdiction.
Does design differ significantly by building type?
Yes. A warehouse with high-piled storage requires a very different density and coverage approach than an office building, largely driven by the hazard classification of the contents and construction.
What happens if a design does not pass plan review?
The AHJ returns comments identifying the deficiencies, and the designer revises and resubmits the plans and calculations before installation can proceed.
