A commercial fire alarm inspection follows a defined process under NFPA 72. Knowing what to expect ahead of time makes the visit faster and helps you catch any deficiencies before the inspector does.
1. Visual Inspection of Devices
The technician visually checks smoke detectors, heat detectors, pull stations, and notification appliances (horns and strobes) for physical damage, obstructions, or paint overspray that could impair function.
2. Functional Testing
NFPA 72 requires a sample or full test of initiating devices depending on the interval and device type, confirming each one actually triggers the panel and produces the correct signal.
3. Control Panel and Battery Test
The fire alarm control panel (FACP) is tested for proper operation, including backup battery function, since the system must continue operating during a power outage.
4. Monitoring Confirmation
If the system reports to a central monitoring station, the inspector typically places a test call to confirm the connection is live and signals are being received correctly.
5. Documentation
A written, dated report is left on file, which is what a fire marshal will ask to see during a code compliance review.
