What “Means of Egress” Covers
Means of egress is the building code term for the complete, unobstructed path from any point in a building to a public way: exit access, the exit itself (a stairwell, for example), and exit discharge to the outside. Requirements cover exit width, travel distance, and the number of exits required based on occupancy classification and occupant load.
Emergency Lighting and Exit Signage
Egress paths must remain visible during a power failure, which is why code requires emergency lighting along exit routes and illuminated exit signage with backup power, typically tested on a similar schedule to portable fire extinguishers, a monthly function check and an annual 90-minute duration test.
How Sprinklers Factor Into Egress Design
In some cases, having a fully sprinklered building allows code to permit longer travel distances to an exit or other egress trade-offs, since an active suppression system reduces the fire risk occupants are exposed to while evacuating. This is one of several ways active and passive fire protection systems are designed as a coordinated system rather than independent boxes to check.
